The Aussies reputation of being tough minded people is obviously very wrong. First they give up their guns, next they give up their freedom.

I will tune in for sure. Australia is terrible. A lot of bad stuff going on these days, and I think a lot of people are eager to know how they can fight back. Subscribing to substacks like this is one way, but somehow we have to figure out other ways too. Authorities seem emboldened these days to trample on civil liberties. They need to be reminded that they cannot.

What is also emboldening governments everywhere is that there are anxiety-driven and meaning-searching segment of the population urging their government to greater heights of authoritarianism. It's dictatorship of the hypochondriacs and all varieties of Munchhousens.

Yes I think that's right. It's just unbelievable that they want all these restrictions when we now know that the vaccine doesn't prevent spread anyway. So getting or not getting the vaccine only has an impact on each individual, not others.

Keep in mind, however, that in the middle of winter at least SOME people have a completely rational reason to mask and did before Bat Soup. In particular, my lungs are crap in the cold. I watch sports to get away from politics and the culture wars. Some cross-over is inevitable but the Djokovic situation seems gratuitous. From what I understand, the Australian govt was well aware Djokovic was unvaccinated when they granted him an exemption and a visa. Relying on that he makes the flight to Australia. Then a customs official pulls it after he lands and forces him to stay in a quarantine area for days (not implying this was a jail or even harsh conditions. But it did deprive him of his AO warmups and humiliated a cultural icon from a homeland that doesn’t have many). Then a judge, correctly in my view, overrules the arbitrary revocation and reinstates the visa. Then Hawke, who evidently could have intervened at any time, essentially overrules the court and revokes the visa again. That is appealed yet again, and Djokovic loses and is deported. He is now banned from entering Australia for three years. Obviously, if he had known all of this when granted his exemption, he would have never made the trip. I would be shocked if he ever set foot in Australia again even if given an exemption from the three year ban next year (why would he rely on that? Fly there again and have it overruled?).

If Australian wants to enforce its rules, then they should have never given him an exemption in the first place. The grandstanding by Hawke as well as the PM demonstrate how politicized this process was. They site historical info on Djokovic (eg, past statements on the vaccine) but that info was publicly known before he was granted an exemption and made the flight to Australia. This is a black mark on Australia, whose legal system appears almost comically stupid to me as long as I’m thousands of miles away and not subject to it. It’s a black mark on the ATP who was bizarrely silent while this played out. It’s a black mark on the ATP players, who aside from Nadal and a few others including the person GG interviewed have been silent. It’s a black mark on the AO, which struggled for years to be recognized as a “real” major (in the 70s and early 80s the major stars like Connors, Borg, McEnroe would routinely skip the AO). This tournament now is a major that lacks the #1 ranked player (and not due to injury). This is unprecedented in the last 3 decades. Whoever wins will unfortunately face a “yeah, but” every time their win comes up. There are no winners in this situation. All losers, including Djokovic who at 34 has a finite number of majors he can still compete for.

Oh, Glenn. Thank you.

While every country has a right to impose wherever conditions it wants at its borders, the Novak saga is illuminating for two reasons.

First is that Novak was misled: he would have clearly never taken the flight if the authorities were clear about the conditions for entry. There was a goof up there which is NOT Novak’s fault.

Secondly, the rationale given that unvaccinated people pose a risk is unscientific

The term “Vaccine” used to be defined as some extraneous agent given to a person to cause immunity from a disease or pathogen.

Given that COVID “vaccines” weren’t fitting the original definition, the WHO/CDC changed the definition to any drug that induces an antibody response to a particular pathogen.

Ok then, let’s use the updated definition. Guess what ELSE induces an antibody response to COVID. COVID. Just like getting chicken pox induces antibodies against getting infected again, COVID does too. (Though it’s antibody response is not as permanent as say chicken pox).

So Novak has antibodies from having contracted COVID before, and thus a natural immunity which an increasing number of studies show to be superior to vaccine-induced immunity.

So even accepting the establishment rationale for vaccines - that people with antibodies have lower risk to themselves and others - those who have been infected with COVID should also be exempt.

But Vaccination is no longer based on science and reason. It’s become an Establishment Cult. This is how it must have been when the Roman Empire adopted Christianity as the official Religion. Get with the program or be excommunicated, ridiculed and worse.

Vaccination now is the mark of either the Believer (those who fervently believe that with every dose comes salvation no matter how discredited the results with the Pfizer CEO himself casually admitting 2 doses do little now and promising v1.1 in March for the Omicron variant*), or the Defeated (those beaten down to take it despite reservations). This then makes the Dissidents, the Blasphemers of the new Imperial Religion, the official Enemies to be persecuted and made examples of.

*see https://rumble.com/vsehus-pfizer-ceo-and-we-know-2-doses-of-the-vaccine-offers-limited-protection-if-.html for Pfizer CEO saying that “2 doses offer limited protection if any, and 3 doses with booster offer reasonable protection against hospitalizations and death and less protection against infection [ed: goalposts changed from when first announced] ….We are working on a new version..the 1.1…which will cover Onicron as well.”

Yes. Basically just like Religion was used a tool to control the masses - who were led to believe that without it their souls were damned - the same fearmongering has resulted in otherwise secular people to become entranced with The Vaccine as protective of their lives.

Thus those who go against the Religion are a threat. We have seen this in history before. And where this mentality has led.

Glenn,

Sorry I’ll miss the event….

Djokovic is a bit of a tough case as he created a number of problems for himself before he got to Australia - had Covid but went out to various gatherings, etc and posted it on social media. It didn’t help his case.

Australia’s govt is taking a very tough stand and creating huge internal issues. The govt definitely saw any exception for Djokovic as a loss of face for them…and they flat out admitted as much..

That aspect - govts enforcing policies so they don’t lose face - is abject tyranny.

Govts are formed by consent of the governed. When govts see the people as a threat, big problems coming…

According to his claims, which the government doesn't contest, Djokovic went to only one event after he received his positive COVID test in December: a long-scheduled photo shoot with a French magazine. He said it was a mistake in judgment to do so. But note that the Australian government's position -- *after it granted him a legal visa to enter* -- was not that he poses a threat to the public health (after all, the COVID he just got in December obviously gives him immunity) but rather that his 2020 comments on vaccine skepticism makes him an "anti-vax icon" and therefore his presence there could excite anti-vax sentiment. It was based on his political opinions, and that's why Australian immigration activists and human rights activists -- hardly know for being right-wing -- are warning of how dangerous this precedent is:

It’s seems clear that the Aussie government booted Djokovic to maintain social order.

The trouble with Djokovic’s specific situation is it’s not “clean” - Djokovic looks like he was pushing the envelope. Reviewing the events, he admitted that he exercised bad judgment in some of the things he did. He admitted that his very important travel docs were inaccurate. He was supposed to quarantine before arrival and he hadn’t. See the entry for Jan. 12, 2022 from the AP.

“Djokovic’s most extensive public comments on the matter come via a post on social media that is put up by someone while he is practicing at the Australian Open’s main stadium. He says there was a mistake on his travel declaration for Australia, which failed to indicate he had been in multiple countries over the preceding two weeks. Djokovic blames his agent for checking the wrong box on the form, calling it “a human error and certainly not deliberate.” He also discusses what he says was his positive COVID-19 test in December and the L’Equipe interview.”

Djokovic can’t afford people who can get the paperwork right? Talk about mucking up an important situation…

Yes, I agree. There was no health threat. It’s a horrible, horrible precedent. Hitler and Stalin based what they did around the principle of maintaining “social order”. But with all the pure hell the Aussie govt has put it’s own people through vis-a-vis COIVD, it’s a small wonder why the Aussie govt felt they had to boot Djokovic to maintain “good order”.

(I’m not agreeing with the decision because it is my view that the Aussie govt is a bunch of COVID nazis and this just proves it.)

Following old behavior patterns does not count as pushing the envelope. Many of us disagree with the new normal.

Did he have symptoms while out and about with a positive covid test? Even that would have been okay a few years ago, when nobody thought twice about going out with a cold.

Governments are the ones pushing the envelope with all these new requirements. Djokovic is just being a stick in the mud.

Yep, Djokovic gave the Aussie govt all the ammo it needed….they were looking for a way to keep him out.

Now that he’s booted and likely barred for 3 years, the Aussie govt Covid Nazis can say: “See! We mean it, Get back in line or you’re next”…

The definition of: social order. Mission accomplished….

P.S. and Rafa doesn’t sound too upset. He clearly wasn’t sticking up for Novak.

At that point, it escalated into a “dick measuring” contest and he lost. I’d say all of Tennis lost and certainly Australia as viewed as a free and open society lost big time.
