LOVE YOU GLENN!

I hope the launch is telling of your husband and family doing markedly better, I offer a secular prayer for you health and safety....

I really appreciate that. Part of the idea of the pre-launch was to enable us to get started in a way that gives me the flexibility I may need to take a day or two off here and there on days that aren't great for the health crisis in our family. My husband has become more stable and hopefully on the path to improvement and recovery. While nothing is guaranteed, we're hoping that gives me the time, space and energy to at least get this pre-launch up and running, and then well take it from there.

Looking forward to watch. Wishing you your husband and family all the best. God Bless.

Since there was, unexpectedly, no installment of Greenwald's Rumble show announced for tonight, it's possible that his husband's health has gotten noticeably worse. I was hoping that wouldn't be true but it may well be. In any case, can wait till the next installment of the System Update show is announced by email. Greenwald had said he hoped to do shows every weeknight, but he also made very clear to us that he might not be able to do so sometimes if there are health issues for his husband. His husband David's health is and should be the priority, and you can't expect Greenwald to prioritize giving us updates on that.

I have been considering the possibility that there may be a "counter-expectations" tendency in this health crisis with his husband -- which would mean that at times when things are expected to get better, they have a tendency to get worse instead. I don't want to act like I know that's true since I'm not sure if it is, and even if it is true I wouldn't speculate on the cause. But I do want to say, speaking for myself and quite possibly for others, that Greenwald shouldn't feel obliged to return to the planned nightly Rumble show any time soon. He's already done one pre-launch installment for his subscribers, and that was a more than adequate demonstration of what he's hoping to do. It isn't as if pressing ahead rapidly now is needed.

I am considering the possibility that maybe Greenwald might want to put off any future installments of the System Update show more radically than he has already planned -- not just waiting till his husband is out of the ICU or out of the hospital, but maybe even more than that and waiting till his husband David has had some peaceful time at home. Of course this is not my decision to make at all, but as an outsider I can imagine some advantages to it. David would get to be home with the kids (who can only visit in the hospital) and the dogs (who can't visit at all). I'm not totally sure that the new System Update studio is in their family house, but if it is, maybe it would be good for David to spend some time at home without the daily bustle of getting the show ready. When David gets better, at some point he might be able to use his skills in helping to design or redesign aspects of the program, more than he was able to do already, and then it would be even more of a joint project. I wouldn't be surprised if David misses the opportunity to make things more distinctly a joint project and to put his stamp on the path their partnership takes. As he gets closer to doing that he might also somehow get closer to beating the counter-expectations tendency of the illness, though it's far from a one-dimensional thing and I'm sure there are lots of subtleties which I can't know but which Greenwald and Miranda might find their way through as a couple back out of the hospital. So I would be open to postponing future installments of the program longer -- I mean a lot longer, if need be -- until whenever David's constitution has recovered the strength to more or less turn the corner on the "counter-expectations" aspect of his illness. Greenwald's journalistic work is not the only important thing, and I kind of feel that if something is needed to help David turn the corner it may even turn out to have a positive long-term effect on Greenwald's journalism or political work.

Sorry for the uninformed speculation. Of course I'm barely in a position to raise something like this as a possibility, much less call for it. Greenwald has the humaneness to weigh these things and I'm sure issues of this nature are among what he talks over with his husband, when he can (though I don't know if his husband David is even at full strength to go deeply into such things). I just feel that since I'm a part of Greenwald's audience, I should at least mention the above set of issues as a possibility that I'm open to.

In any case, I hope this crisis passes soon. And again, Greenwald doesn't have to keep sending us updates, because his husband's health matters more.

Congratulations Glenn! Can't wait to watch.

OK, but what if I already have a Locals account? The link you sent me from Substack asks me to create a Locals account, when I already have a Locals account. How do I get my Substack credit added to my already existing Locals account? I don't want two Locals accounts.

We'll have someone get back to you on this question.

Thank you

If you have already set up a local's account with the same email as your substack email then you are set.

If you have not created a local's account then go ahead and create one with the same email as your substack email.

If you get an error that this account already exists then do a password reset. If not proceed to create the account.

If you have any more questions, please reach out to support@locals.com

Already did that last week but thanks for the confirmation, Glenn!

Thanks for the info. I used a different email address to sign up for Substack than Locals. For security purposes, I don't use a single email address as my identity. I'll reach out to support@locals.com.

Good to hear, and among other things it shows Greenwald's husband has a better health outlook now.

In terms of irony, this new show is a nice counterpoint to the classic Greenwald tweet "Victor makes me go on Fox" -- twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1126244731464318981 . (Not that I expect Greenwald to stop doing that.)

This could be an important and very valuable show if Greenwald grows with it. I'll wait to see, but my evaluation of that isn't dependent on him agreeing with me on everything.

I'm looking forward to reading the transcripts, hopefully there will be at least rough auto-generated transcripts available without too much of a delay.

Mr Greenwald, will the pre launch local shows be archived and available after the stream ends? Is it exclusively a livestream?

The timing will be a conflict for me and I don't want to miss a second...

The Rumble show itself will always be saved the way all videos are for viewing after the live broadcast. I believe the same will be true for these two weeks of the test runs, on Locals, but will confirm that for you.

How is your husband doing, Glenn?

Not much change since the last update I posted, but he's at least stable and making some slow and incremental but important progress now that we really hope continues this time without further serious complications. I really appreciate your asking.

Glenn, is his illness/condition sepsis (blood poisoning)? If so, recovery might take some time -- know a person with extreme sepsis who made a full recovery.

All the best to your wonderful family.

The set looks great and the design is very apropos - it will have Glenn Greenwald sitting in front of a... wait for it... mostly green wall! Seriously, this new venue is something we're all looking forward to. Wishing you and yours every success!

I tried to register for Locals but abandoned it because it is too intrusive about my info. I do not want to reveal my location, DOB, etc. If I am a paid subscriber the additional info demanded is too intrusive and I will not participate. Thanks.

I fully agree w/ your assessment of the situation.

Frankly, I'm worried that things are BAAAD for Glenn & fam. He's a pretty thorough kind of guy, and to leave us hanging like this is so far out of character that it's worrisome.

I write this at 9:00 am Friday; it was one of the first things I thought about when I woke up.

I'm kind of surprised w/ the level of concern I have for Glenn's family's welfare. Sure, I'm a fan; but I've been a fan of Jimmy Dore, Krystal & Saagar, Russel Brand just to name a few and none of them engender this degree of concern I have for Glenn AND his family.

I think it's borne from the deep and powerful admiration I have for his work, combined with his willingness to display his heart at times. But I don't have the level of insight into myself to fully comprehend its causes. I think I'm on the right track b/c my wife feels pretty much the same.

Godspeed Glenn & fam.

Uh, it's not out of character at all. He has his priorities straight. We can wait, and his love for his husband can't. What he's doing is in keeping with the specific kind of thoroughness he has -- at least that's how I see it.

If he told one of his employees to write a note to us on his behalf, the way many senators or CEOs would, that WOULD be (a bit) out of character. I think some subscribers who logged into Locals last night were kind of expecting that -- if Greenwald wasn't able to show, their expectations were that in that case someone in his organization would be deputized to send a note to us, and these subscribers were surprised they didn't see one. But Greenwald more or less has to write things himself, and has to give what he writes his full concentration -- which doesn't seem to have been possible yesterday, for understandable reasons. I'm not ruling out the possibility that maybe, at some point in his future life, Greenwald may start to find he's able to deputize a trusted longtime employee to write a brief note in this situation. And if he changes to the extent of being able to do that, there would be nothing wrong with having someone speak for him. But also there's nothing wrong with Greenwald staying the way he is, where he never sends us a note in these situations until the family crisis has sufficiently passed. He may well stay that way, and that's fine. If you like his integrity and his intense focus on what matters, you have to accept that you won't get a staffer's note on his behalf like you would from a more corporate journalist. We can express our appreciation for his integrity by making allowances for him in this situation, recognizing that he has his priorities right. I see that as part of the deal in being in his audience. And by not making a fuss about this ourselves, we're doing our part in giving Greenwald the space to do what he can for his husband's well-being, which as you say is something you have concern for.

That said, I wouldn't assume anything one way or another about whether David Miranda's condition today is better or worse than during one of the crises in earlier weeks. Greenwald's reaction doesn't signify anything about that, nor should he be expected to signify or telegraph which crises are more severe than others. It's a time when Greenwald has to be there for his husband, and he's doing that. There have been some readers over these past months who shared their story of how they or their loved ones had medical conditions similar to what David Miranda had, and eventually fully recovered. That's very valuable to hear. So, although we don't know yet whether his husband will make it out of this, full recovery remains a strong possibility, as it has always been.
